Noon – 5 p.m. Special Exhibit featuring HANDS: BANK STREET ONSTAGE, 1985: A Forward-Looking Retrospective
This exhibit looks back on HANDS, an environmental play by New London writers Charles Frink and Resurreccion Espinosa. The play started taking form while discussing the variety of people and life experiences that came together at the winter art show that took place in the old Hygienic Restaurant on Bank Street. The play premiered at UConn Avery Point Theater, under the auspices of the William Billings Institute of American Music Festival. The authors wanted to explore a new form of doing theater in which their community would be the topic---current events and the concerns of everyday people, the themes developed in dialogues and monologues; the songs, speaking of the deep feelings and thoughts that common people have but do not dare to express; the dancer that represented the spirit of a painter, who had just passed away, expressing so many emotions that give dignity to our experience.

The event may include artists' monologues, discussions of what kind of community theater is possible today, and a guided tour of the exhibit conducted by the curators.
