Project/Mission Statement
A Place to Sit and Talk is an artistic and immersive display of data. The report and exhibition advocate for a re-investment in our relationships with our neighbors. Third spaces are places that exist beyond your work, school, and home. They are somewhere to go when you want to see people other than your family and co-workers. Third places do not require social interaction but, rather, allow us the opportunity to learn about the people around us by witnessing them going about their own lives. We cannot satisfy our psychological need for social bonds online but we can when we socialize in-person. I conducted eleven interviews with people ranging from Gen Z to Baby Boomers with the goal of understanding what attractive third place qualities are constants. The exhibit is an amalgamation of each quality raised in the interviews and shows visitors what it takes to create a strong community.
